Inverness and Thereabouts

We had a leisurely breakfast over chocolate croissants and tea with some reading. We left midmorning and headed north on the A9 toward Culloden Battlefield, very close to the Stones of Clava which we visited over the weekend. On the way, we had the radio on. The big news item of the day is that a volcano has erupted in Iceland. The ash has stopped flights from Scottish airports. Delays may last well into tomorrow. As our flight down to London is the day after tomorrow (and the layover between the two flights is short enough as it is), we're a bit concerned. We'll buy a newspaper tomorrow and see how things go. After you've walked through the displays and sat through a short 360-degree film depicting the battle in gory detail, you could then talk to some re-enactors (here for the anniversary so that was nice) and then take a free audio tour. The tour uses an earpiece and a hand-held interactive screen. It has GPS so it knew exactly where we were on the cold and blustery battlefield, and the recording automatically turned on as we reached each point of interest. One feature of the battlefield is the memorial stones where clansmen fell and were buried. Curmudgeon's specific clan didn't seem to be listed, but the chief of a big confederation it belonged to was. We were pretty hungry afterwards so, rather than going to see Cawdor Castle just down the road, we drove into Inverness to eat at an inexpensive Italian restaurant we'd read about in Frommer's called Riva. It's in the city center by the river, and getting there didn't go the way the map predicted it would, LOL. Still, Curmudgeon's impeccable sense of direction prevailed, and we found the nearby parking lot, too. Then it was back outside to a shop we'd read about in Frommers, Duncan, Chisholm, and Sons, kiltmakers. The saleslady told us how much it would be for a kilt in Curmudgeon's clan's tartan: £450! I asked if…um…they had something smaller like scarves or ties. They were out of stock on both,...
