Ex-British Army officer guilty of Afghanistan corruption
Bill Shaw, a director of the global security firm G4S, was imprisoned for two years and fined $25,000 (ВЈ16,300) after being convicted of bribing Afghan intelligence officers for the release of two impounded armoured cars.
The ex-Royal Military Police officer was one of the first to face charges at the Anti-Corruption Tribunal, a body only set up under British pressure at the start of this year and bankrolled by the UK taxpayer.
Diplomats conceded that Mr Shaw, who denied charges of paying $20,000 (ВЈ13,000) in bribes to two Aghan intelligence officers for the release of impounded armoured vehicles, had fallen victim to a deterioration in relations between Mr Karzai and the British officials.
Mr Karzai has grown increasingly belligerent towards his British and American patrons as pressure has grown on the Afghan leader to tackle corruption and improve the standard of government in the war-torn nation.
Mr Shaw was commercial manager in Afghanistan for G4S, which provides security for Western embassies among other contracts, when two cars were impounded in October for lacking Ministry of Interior licences.
He and Maiwand Limar, an Afghan bodyguard, were later arrested for making illegal payments to officers from the National Security Directorate (NDS), Afghanistan’s intelligence service, to release the cars. The defence claimed that Mr Shaw believed he was making a legitimate release payment.
After the payment the cars were returned but the two officers reportedly disappeared.
The convicted men were taken to Kabul’s Pul-i-Charki jail, which includes a wing reserved for Taliban militants and has seen riots in recent years over poor conditions. They are expected to appeal and Western officials said they would receive as much help as possible to cope with the ordeal. “It is at least a place where our people travel very often,” said one official. “I’m sure we will be looking out for them on a daily basis.”
