WEBS America’s Yarn Store is less than a mile from the downtown intersection of Pleasant Street and Main Street in Northampton, Mass.  Northampton Wools, the city’s other yarn shop, fits snuggly in an elegant brownstone between a high-end chocolate store and an Italian pastry shop.  A short distance away, on Service Center Road, behind the Public Health Department, is a large gray industrial garage.  It is the home of WEBS.

The business is something of a family affair.  WEBS was started in 1974 by Barbara Elkins.  Her husband, Arthur, joined her 13 years later when the store began to grow.  When the Elkins retired in 2002 their son, Steve, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, took over as owners.

“People don’t realize how big the fiber world is,” said Karen Minott, the WEBS store manager.  “It’s not twenty years ago when there was just wool and acrylics.  There are so many new fibers out there, yak wool, yarn with seaweed in it, bamboo.  From the farm to clothing design is this whole industry.”

Minott, a Belchertown, Mass. resident, started working part time at the store six years ago.  She now manages sixteen retail sales people, three stockers and two assistant managers.

WEBS, the single largest yarn store in the country, is a destination for customers who are willing to travel.  Although the company has an online store, the most enthusiastic yarn crafters will drive hours for the experience of shopping in-store.  “We have a bus next week coming from Connecticut,” said Minott, who is responsible for scheduling these trips.  “I like to give little goodie bags: a tape measure, wool wash, maybe some candy.”

The holiday season, when it starts to get cold outside and customers buy supplies for handmade Christmas gifts, used to be the busiest season for WEBS.  “But now it never seems to slow,” said Minott, even in a sluggish economy.  “This has been an amazing business to watch grow.”

Are there any ways to remove the contrasting vinyl marks left behind on a box truck?

When you remove vinyl from a fiberglass box truck there are marks that show the weathered parts that were not covered by vinyl. These marks are usually more glossy than the rest of the box. Are there any products available? Or is the easiest way to just use a buffer and rubbing compound?

new paint or wet sand and buff it- just get a new paint job everywhere but where the vinyls used to be is faded- try rubbing compound first though
