Industrial porn; heritage of Coventry?
No, I’m not talking about nekkid people going at it like rabbits. I’m talking about photography, in particular the photography of abandoned industrial structures. See, coming from this city called Coventry, we have all grown up around industrial structures in this city; from the chimneys of the Courtaulds factories to Stoke and Ryton Peugeot plants. Coventry, from what I am aware, has a rich industrial heritage – starting with ribbon and textile manufacturing, moving into watches, then cycles, motorcycles and eventually the car. But, no longer does Coventry have any of this. The factories are long gone. There are but two major manufacturers left in the city; LTI Ltd. (for international readers, that is the company that makes the famous British hackney carriage seen in all the movies in the establishing shots of London) and Spyker – the supercar company.
A few months ago, I stumbled across a website all about urban exploration. This isn’t something new to me. In fact, a few years ago I came across a photographer who had taken photographs from inside mental institutes in the United States and for the life of me I cannot remember the photographer’s name. Anyhow, when looking at old Ordanance Survey maps of Coventry, I went on the hunt for photographs online from those factories in their hay day and that quickly became a look at the factories as they stood or stand, derelict. Urban exploration is techincally illegal. It’s trespassing on property that isn’t yours. But as is the urban explorer mantra, “leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photographs”. And hence the term, “industrial porn”.
I now have a folder full of these photographs, printed after finding them on several urban explorer forums across the web, where I first read and heard about the term “industrial porn”. Gigantic, abandoned, derelict buildings – its like the management stumbled out of their office after a meeting with the union one day to an awaiting crowd of workers and declared that the factory was closed, pack up and go home – and no one ever returned. The specific photography I took great interest in was that of the Little Heath Courtaulds acetate plant in Coventry (which, since autumn 2009 was slowly being demolished). This is one of those big scary buildings you go past as a kid and it genuinely creeps you out. You don’t understand how they make what they make in there, all you see is trucks with big hazardous chemicals warnings on the back of them and a gigantic chimney. Creepy lookin’ gigantic chimney.
