The Saga of Me & The Family Gas Station
When the temperature drops below zero, bad things happen. Water mains and pipes freeze, cars don’t want to start, and if you’re unlucky enough to have a heating oil tank that sat outside the building, any moisture in the line could freeze damming up the flow of oil producing heat. V&E’s building had such luck. The 275 gallon oil tank was outside on the east side of the station. Moisture from condensation had made its way into the feed line to the furnace and froze. Where the freeze was was anybody’s guess. My dad’s call into Sinclair’s building maintenance team got nowhere fast. “Oh, come on! What do you mean ‘next week’? Can’t you get somebody out here sooner?!?”, a brief pause, “OK, we’ll try that.” He hung up. “What’d they say?”, I asked. “Try calling a heating outfit and send the bill to Sinclair.”, my dad said exasperated. He got the “Yellow Pages” out and started leafing through to the ‘Heating & Air Conditioning’ section. “At least we have electric.”, I muttered as I flipped on the pumps. The driveway bell rang and I went out to greet the first cold soul of the day.
It was our next-door neighbor, Joe. He was driving his 1969 Mercury Colony Park Station Wagon today.
