Call Me Crazy
Go ahead, call me crazy, you won’t be the first, but in actuality, I am quite sane…Everyone else is nuts.
My son had driver’s education today and forgot his wallet and permit. So, I headed for Bunker Hill and went to the high school. As I approached the door to the school I read the sign that says that smoking is prohibited on school grounds. This sign is the result of the “Child Protection Act” of 1994. I am all for protecting children, no problem there, but this particular act seems sort of, well, impotent. Our kids can’t smoke in school, which is good, but they can purchase sodas and a wide variety of junk food in the school cafeteria, which is bad. That got me thinking about childhood obesity. When I was a kid, there wasn’t a slew of fast food places on every corner, microwave dinners were still a few years in the future, mom cooked good wholesome meals, and I don’t remember going to school with many really obese kids. There we’re a few, but just a few. Today, there seems to be a fast food burger joint within walking distance of over half of the population, mom no longer cooks, or if she does she whips a frozen pizza into the oven, and kids are getting bigger. Obesity recently replaced smoking as a leading cause of illness.
If we really want to protect our children, we need to start by getting rid of fast food places that serve high calorie, high fat, highly processed foods and give incentives to restaurateurs who serve low cal, wholesome, unprocessed (as much as possible) foods. We also need to impose a ban on commercial advertising that caters to children. When my son was three years old he couldn’t find a farmer’s market if you paid him, but he would gladly direct you to the local McGonads. My fault, “Bad Scott”! We also need to get rid of all the corn syrup that seems to have worked it’s way into almost everything we eat. There are natural, very low calorie sweeteners available such as  Beet Sugar, Stevia Leaf, Agave, and  Yakon Syrup to name just a few, that can be substituted for corn syrup.
