One item out of the guilt basket
When my oldest son packed up his belongings and loaded them onto a Penske truck that summer morning almost three years ago, I thought I handled it really well. In the days leading up to his departure, I offered meals, manual labor and very little in the way of advice as he prepared to start his first post-college job in Washington, D.C.В I even made it through the moment of “goodbye” without a tear.
After Andy drove off, I went back into the house to collect my own belongings so I could go to work.
“I thought you were going to stay home this morning,” said our two-years-younger son David, who would soon head out himself, bound for California and his junior year of college.
It was true. I was so sure I’d be devastated the morning Andy left that I’d planned ahead for my own breakdown and taken the morning off.
“You know, I’m really doing fine!” I said cheerfully. “I think I’ll go ahead and go in to the office.”
I got in my 2002 Toyota Highlander, backed confidently out of the driveway and promptly smashed into the side of David’s 1997 Camry.
For two and a half years, I refused to repair the damage. It’s like I wanted to punish myself for my stupidity — and remind myself that sometimes, no matter how “okay” I think I am, I’m not.В We all have limitations to our emotional reserves. We need to honor those limits. Nothing has reinforced that message more firmly for me than looking at my smashed bumper every single day.
Too often, we “women who do too much” keep pushing on — past the point of exhaustion, past the point of productivity, past the point when our nerves are completely frayed. We think of recovery — time to rest, time to process, time to heal — as a luxury we don’t deserve and can’t possibly make time for.
Last week, I decided that two and a half years was long enough for self-flagellation. My birthday is approaching and, with my husband’s blessing, I gave myself a gift: a new bumper for my eight-year-old car. Now, instead of cringing each time I approach my vehicle, I smile. I have one less burden to carry around in my guilt basket. And that’s the best gift of all.
