Bryan had the tiller and delivered a few stories that involved the both of us. The Train we were riding had sped back up and was still heading due north. There wasn’t a lot we could do about stopping so we just reflected on the past few years and laughed and snickered as events flooded our memories.
During the pledge phase of our friendship we knew we were sorting each other out in more ways than just drinking. We challenged each other to do anything that was a traditional pledge duty with flair and style. What it really meant was we were going to push every limit we possibly could, all the while pushing the outer limits of the patience of the brothers charged with our fraternal education. There were numerous physical challenges we faced and our collective goals were to shatter every record achieved up to that point, all with a fresh and cocky edge. One of the very most challenging physical feats was the pledge course run. It was a weekly event separating the ” real men from the men”. I had just come off four grueling years of physical training under the watchful eye of Coach Hannibal Lector. To say I was physically fit was an understatement. I was a 275 pound freight train that could bench press 400 pounds and run for hours.
Training was a mainstay in my football career. In 1980 the outdoor temperatures hovered in the 115-119 degrees for most of the summer and fall. To say it was hot was a like saying the Titanic was a really big boat. I have said it before but it bears repeating, Coach Bradshaw believed with all his heart that “sweating was a complete lack of discipline” and (I actually heard this in a movie in later years) “Water was for washing blood out of game uniforms.” These exact phrases were repeated by Denzel Washington in “Remember the Titans”. I thought Mr. Washington might have been channeling Coach Bradshaw in the movie and I got cold chills when I heard the words. Bradshaw never allowed water breaks of any sort during the grueling 4 hours practices filled with running, hitting, and scrimmage drills so intense that some players totally dehydrated and would collapse on the practice field.
