Spring Break in Florida – Party Time for College Students

My Spring Break days are long gone, but since I live in Florida, I can still enjoy Spring Break vicariously … and maybe even voyeuristically. Want to join me? Come on. Florida is pretty much the “King of Spring Break”. While Daytona Beach used to epitomize Spring Break, Panama City Beach, Key West, Orlando, and Miami’s South Beach are far more popular nowadays. (Back when I went on Spring Break in the ’80’s, Ft. Lauderdale was the cool place to go.)

Daytona Beach still has its share of spring breakers, largely in part due to its 23 mile beach – sixteen of those miles you can drive on. Festivities include the “World’s Most Famous Soundoff,” which has the usual bikini contests, and beach parties (yes, alcohol is allowed on the beach). Favorite college student nightclubs include Razzles and Ocean Deck.

Since Daytona Beach is no longer the number one destination for Spring Break, the city offers lower hotel rates than other destinations to lure the budget conscious student back. Additionally, Daytona’s location is handy; about an hour away are Disney World, Universal Studios, Wet ‘n Wild, Sea World, and the Kennedy Space Center.

The much more popular Panama City Beach recently won the “Spring Break Capital” award. Since the residents of Panama City Beach welcome spring breakers with open arms, they go out of their way to make sure college students have a great time, and it shows! Even MTV has joined the bandwagon and heads to Panama City Beach for spring break!

The hot nightspot for the college students is the Spinnaker Beach Club – a huge club that holds wild contests, giveaways, live cams, and some of the best live bands around. After all, college students want to party hard, and they need booze and music to do so!

If you want a break from the crowds, check out St. Andrews State Park, which contains well over 1,000 acres of coastal dunes, forests, wetlands, and yes, beaches.
