An editor once told me I could manage to write 800 words on the way to the bathroom if I wanted to, but this morning I'm physically and mentally stifled.

I'm overwhelmed by the courage, conviction and prince-like grace former  Detroit Tiger broadcaster Ernie Harwell  has for everyone else in spite of his inoperable cancer diagnosis. Like so many last night, I watched Harwell stride confidently onto the green lush at Comerica Park. At nearly 92 years old and facing his probable death, Harwell looked like he could still work, didn't he? He walked and talked with the gait and grip on the moment befitting a man half his age.

He's simply an amazing man, a treasure to be cherished in all of baseball but particularly so in metro Detroit and Michigan statewide. For reasons I can't state in words, I'm awestruck by Harwell's amazing resilience and positive energy. Michigan has been blessed by many gifts over nearly 200 years, including the Dodge brothers, Henry Ford, Billy Durand, Ty Cobb, Joe Louis, Leonard Elmore, Motown music etc., but there might not be any metro Detroiter more deserving of the state's adulation more than Harwell.

The grace, good will and courage from Harwell, forever our  'Voice of Summer' , have left me speechless.
